Rep. Burgess Owens Works to Strengthen Voter Eligibility Laws

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Burgess Owens (R-UT) has voted in support of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, a bill he co-sponsored to reinforce requirements that only U.S. citizens may vote in federal elections. The legislation aims to bolster existing voting laws by introducing stricter measures for verifying citizenship during the voter registration process.
“The right to vote is sacred—it belongs to American citizens,” said Rep. Owens. He criticized the Biden administration’s immigration policies and states like California for, in his view, weakening election integrity by limiting citizenship verification. The SAVE Act, he said, would “bring accountability back to our elections” by closing loopholes and ensuring that only legal votes are counted.
The bill mandates that states require in-person proof of citizenship when registering voters and directs them to remove non-citizens from current voter rolls, providing resources to assist with the process. The SAVE Act passed the House in a bipartisan vote during the 118th Congress but was ultimately blocked in the Senate.
